Our Austro-Hungarian Zugsführer and his Schützenauszeichnung

I also just wanted to post a little more info I received from one of the online military experts that I had sent copies of those two Spohr family photos of the soldiers. Although he wasn’t able to give a lot more new info about the soldier in the photo, he did give some cool details. Here is what he wrote me about these photos:

“The uniform appears to be that of a pre-WW1 Austro-Hungarian Zugsführer (sergeant), which makes sense as Teplitz and Carlsbad were then part of Bohemia and subsequently part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Impossible to get a regiment or unit I.D. from the pictures unfortunately.
The braided cord with 5 woolen balls is a marksmanship cord or Schützenauszeichnung.
Hope this helps a little.”

The other person who I sent copies of my photos to also identified him as a Sergeant, and sent me a link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Hungarian_Army#Ranks_and_rank_insignias_of_the_Austria-Hungarian_Army, to an article about the Austro-Hungarian rank insignias (the stars on their collars). Too bad it’s a black and white photo, or we may have been able to identify a little more info about his rank.
I don’t know much about military research at all – especially not European military – but now this has got me wondering if there are records that I could search through that might list the names of the sergeants – if I found one at the right time and location with a surname of Spohr (or one of the other family surnames), we just might be able to identify this soldier. Don’t know if that can be done. We’ll see.
