Helen and Earl Spohr family of Washington D.C.

In an attempt to get more genealogy material online, I decided that rather then only posting information about the research I am currently doing (which is limited by how much time I am able to spend on genealogy with all of the other things going on in my life), that I will also try to intermittently post materials that I have saved on my computer from past research, and genealogy that family members have shared with me.

So, here goes:

I found this letter from a Helen Spohr at the home of my grandma, Beverly Monk Spohr. I believe that Helen was writing to my great grandparents, Carl and Nettie Graham Spohr. I’d never come across anyone named Helen Spohr, or the other family members she writes about, in my research before finding this letter. In 2008 I took some time to try to figure out how this family is connected to our Spohr relatives. I typed up the letter and then used clues from the letter to search for members of Helen Spohr’s family, hoping to find a common ancestor, but I wasn’t able to figure out how they were related. In her letter, Helen certainly seemed familiar with “our” side of the Spohr family, even mentioning my grandpa Carl’s cousin, Dolores Anne Spohr.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the letter:

“December 28, 1940.
1103 – C. St. S. E.

My dear Cousins,
So glad to hear from you and pleased to get the Christmas card with your picture, there certainly is a most decided family resemblance between our boys and men. Will send you a snap made of our children and let you judge – I’m sure you’ll say Earl and Carl are very much alike in the face altho Earl’s hair is curly and he is five feet tall, weighs 82 lbs now, sure grows fast. He will be ten years old on January 15th. What date is Carl’s birthday in June? Mine is 11th.
My goodness, Carl sure had a hard start in life didn’t he? But am so happy to know he is well and happy now – I love boys especially and they almost all take to me, big or little, my house is full of boys, boys, boys! I think it’s grand Carl has a bike, Earl is crazy for one but with so many doctor bills and three children also my completely paralyzed brother to provide for – well we just can’t get him one. Maybe some day later we can.
Go ahead and ‘rave’ about your boy, I just love it! And it would be easy to love Carl, I like him a lot already. Tell him my kids are wild to see their cousin and will have a big time. Mary Lou can do the same as any rough boy her size, she fights, plays, wrestles – all like a ‘tough little guy.’ I know she’d love to wrestle around with Carl, all the boys like her, and girls a little afraid.
Earl was promoted two weeks ago to the Senior choir, his voice has improved a lot in his practice at church. He isn’t allowed to sing swing songs as voice is trained for hymns and chants. Can reach a high ‘C’ very nicely. He won a gold cross for the highest soprano.
We are terribly sorry about the family loss and will try to call or write Mrs. Ramirch. You know D. C. has 674,000 people, while it’s not a big city, it is fairly large. I have lived here for fourteen years in June.
Congratulations on the new baby, isn’t that nice? And a son, too! Hope both are fine. What is the baby’s name?
Tell Delores that her cousin Mary Lou is just seven but another tomboy so they will have a grand and glorious time when we stop by next summer, as we plan.
Sorry to say that my father-in-law, Clyde Spohr, is dying with an enlarged heart, we got word on Christmas Eve. It made us quite sad all during the holidays.
Hope you all had a nice Christmas, sure enough wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year.
We had a really pretty tree and the kids got lots of things, so many relatives.
Earl got his chemistry set and microscope, he wants to be a surgeon some day. Of course Mary Lou got a doll, dishes etc. She said she’d rather have a gun + soldiers! Edward was only 5½ months on Christmas Eve, he got clothes and high chair. Is cutting teeth now.
Kids gone to matinee, they go every Saturday as have cowboy pictures for children they like Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy and such. We are careful what they see.
I am a grade mother and committee matron in our P.T.A. at Bryan school, also a Sunday school teacher. I think it’s fine Carl is a cub scout but Earl says none of his ‘gang’ are, they all want to wait to be regular scouts. He goes to fifth grade in Feb., what grade is Carl in? I guess he is a way ahead of Earl, being older by some months. Earl does well tho, Mary Lou is in high second soon.
It is chilly + rainy here today. Bunch of big boys are in living room playing Monopoly and laughing, they just fixed a set of lights that blew out. All around 16 or 17. I yelled in for them not to play too much with Edward’s rattle – ha ha. Say they won’t.
Our tree is so dry, guess we will take it down New Year day, place is so warm here. Have six rooms + bath apt. but small rooms.
Well dear know you have your hands full and so have I right now as my maid is sick, I hung out some baby clothes and broke a couple adhesions, sure felt terrible. But tied up tight now so feel better. I am just an old useless critter now a days.
Earl fixed a mess of chow mein for supper last night, will finish it for lunch. He and the others made hot cakes for their Saturdays, I let them fix their own meals and once in a while in between if I am too bad. As they don’t like outside cooks. Earl is a real good cook, makes fine biscuits + gravy, bread, and is great at candy and cakes too – he would be.
He sure will be delighted to hear from Carl all right, bet they’ll be pals on sight. Earl is a friendly easy going boy, lots of friends. He never fights unless forced into it.
Well will have to say byebye for now. Was mighty proud to hear from you all and hope you’ll write soon again.
Tell all best wishes from all of us for a very happy New year,

Affectionately,
Helen Earl + Family

Love to Carl. Sure liked the picture.”

------------------------------------------------------------------

But I can’t figure out how Helen Spohr and her relatives would be connected to us – as far as I know, my great, great grandfather, Ludwig “Louis” Spohr came to the United States, and the only other family member that we know of who came was his sister, Amelia. Since Amelia married, she did not have any descendants by the name of Spohr. Ludwig Spohr married Anna Marie Ott and they had two surviving sons, Louis Christopher Spohr and Carl John Spohr. Carl John Spohr is my great grandfather – he married Nettie Dorothy Graham and they were the parents of my grandpa, Carl Jr. (who was an only child). Louis Christopher Spohr married Nettie’s sister, Florence Frances Graham, and Louis and Florence had three children: Louis John Spohr, Dolores Anne Spohr (Lyerla) (Cunningham), and Frank K. Spohr. Since the letter was written in 1940, when my grandpa Carl (Jr.) was about 10 years old, and Helen Spohr had three children at the time with the oldest not much younger than my grandpa Carl, it is reasonable to think that Helen was born in the same generation as my great grandparents, Nettie and Carl. But Helen’s husband couldn’t have been another descendant of Ludwig Spohr, as she mentions the name of her father-in-law, Clyde Spohr. The only conclusion that I can come to, if in deed these two Spohr families were actually closely related, is that Helen Spohr’s husband’s family is descended from another relative of Ludwig and Amelia who also came to America?

It would really be interesting to find out more about who Helen Spohr’s husband descended from, and how they are related to Ludwig Spohr and his descendants. If anyone out there has any ideas, I’d love to hear them!

It’s been a while since I looked back at this research, but here are all the documents I found at the time, and my research notes that I took. (I also have a genealogy file that I created from the information that I found in the letter and these other sources, if anyone’s interested – too bad I can’t share a gedcom file on this blog. But if anyone wants it, I’d be glad to e-mail it to you).

------------------------------------------------------------------

From all of that, I was able to piece together the following information about Helen Spohr and her family:

Helen and her husband, Earl Clyde Spohr, had three children that I know of: Earl, Mary Lou, and Edward Spohr.

Earl Clude Spohr was the son of Clyde Spohr and Louella Cree. Louella Cree was the daughter of Thomas C. Cree and Carrie V. Lockman. Louella had one brother that I know of, William Cree, and a sister who’s first name I do not know. This ‘unknown’ sister Cree married a man named Carl Guile. Louella Cree and Clyde Spohr were divorced, and Louella remarried to George A. Wall. Louella and George had a daughter named Ruth B. Wall.

Clyde Spohr was the son of William H. Spohr and Mary A. (unknown maiden name). William H. Spohr was born about April 1852 in New York state, and Mary A. was born about September 1854 in Van Buren, Iowa. William Spohr’s parents were both born in Germany (according to census records). William and Mary A. Spohr had six children that I know of:
1. an unknown child who was born and died before 1901
2. Cloe Spohr born about 1877 in Iowa, and died before 1901
3. Maud Spohr born about July 1879 in Iowa, and died before 1901
4. another unknown child who was also born and died before 1901
5. Clyde Spohr who was born about June 1883 in Kansas, and married Louella Cree
6. and Reva A. Spohr who was born about April 1890 in Wapello, Iowa, and married a man by the surname of McMain – Reva and her husband had a son named Carl McMain

I haven’t included all of the dates and locations, but hopefully that is enough information for someone out there to possibly help me connect these two Spohr families.

I don’t know who the parents of William Spohr (born about April 1852) were. I don’t think that my great, great grandfather, Ludwig Spohr, had a brother William. Could Ludwig and William have been cousins??? Any suggestions on this connection would be appreciated! Thanks.
